Tactical guns are primarily used in combat situations. Therefore, the amount of attention invested in detailing and designing of the tactical guns is impeccable.

The design process of a tactical gun is very different from that of a hunting rifle because the two weapons serve different purposes. As you will learn from this article, the performance of a tactical gun is mainly determined by the design specifications.

Rate of Discharge (Firing Rate)

A tactical gun is either considered lethal or non-lethal depending on its rate of discharge. The rate of discharge of a gun is the number of rounds a gun can fire within a specified amount of time, usually measured in the number of rounds per minute.

The most common lethal weapons are the AK-47 and the M16 rifles, as they are capable of firing up to 100 rounds in a minute. Machine guns, on the other hand, have the ability to discharge rounds at ten times the rate of the M16 rifle.

Additionally, a machine gun is loaded differently compared to a hand-held tactical rifle. The machine gun is fed with belted rounds that hold up to 1000 rounds per belt. The ability of the machine gun to fire through a full round belt in a single minute makes it a force to reckon with.

Caliber Size

The size of the bullet fires is what determines the caliber size of the gun. Thus, a tactical gun with a higher caliber is more lethal than a lower caliber gun. 

AK-47 rifle is one of the most lethal tactical weapons in the market, and has a way higher caliber than a Glock 19 pistol. Therefore, the Ak-47 is preferable than the pistol in a tactical situation that requires shooting at long-range targets.

The accuracy of a tactical weapon is highly affected by the caliber size; the bigger the rounds, the more the accuracy reduces. Therefore, for increased accuracy in a tactical gun, additional stabilizers are necessary.

Size of the Barrel

The barrel is the tubular end part of a rifle from which a fired round is projected. Most tactical weapons in various gun stores in Michigan are characterized by long barrels that are fitted with long muzzles due to the size of their rounds. These weapons use large rounds that produce a lot of recoil upon firing.

The tactical gun is fitted with a shoulder pad that helps to transfer the recoil of a fired round to your body. The long barrel reduces the chances of firing off-target by increasing the distance of recoil. Additionally, the threaded internal walls of the barrel ensure that the fired round gains as much rotary momentum before exiting the muzzle.

Rotary momentum is necessary to ensure that the fired round beats drag and the air’s frictional resistance. Furthermore, the rotary momentum allows the bullet to stay in a straight projectile, thereby increasing the firing distance and accuracy.

Sniper rifles use very large rounds, explaining why their barrels are made with very long muzzles. Much of the action is used to project the fired round thereby generating a lower amount of recoil, much of which is transferred to the ground through the base supports.

Accuracy

For a tactical weapon, range and accuracy are the most important factors considered during its design phase. As such, additional features need to be added to increase the gun’s accuracy.

One of the additional specs on a tactical rifle is the aperture sight, which is mounted on the far end of the muzzle. The aperture sight guides the shooter by focusing his sight on the aperture, which is precisely aligned to the bullet’s trajectory.

Telescopic sights are more accurate than aperture sights for long-range weapons because they have intersecting crosshairs that pinpoint the exact impact position the bullet will strike. Additionally, modern telescopic sights have thermal imagery that allows the shooter to hit targets placed behind obstacles.
