Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild was a British banker, zoologist and botanist. He was born into the wealthy Rothschild family, and his father Nathaniel Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild was one of the founders of the bank N M Rothschild & Sons. Victor’s uncle Lionel de Rothschild served as a Member of Parliament (MP) while another uncle, Anthony Gustav de Rothschild, became head of the bank in 1879.

Victor attended Trinity College, Cambridge where he studied zoology and graduated with a first-class honours degree in 1925. He then worked at the Bank of England for a short time before joining his family’s business. During World War II he worked for British intelligence, helping to decipher coded messages sent by the German military.

After the war he returned to banking and also took an active interest in science and nature. In his later years Victor became known for his eccentricity; he kept pet snakes and spiders and was once bitten by a tarantula! He died in 1990 at the age of 84.
