Douglas a Wright is an award-winning Canadian choreographer, dancer, and director. He has been artistic director of Ballet BC since 2009. His work is known for its physicality, sensuality, and emotional depth.

Wright was born in Vancouver and raised in New Westminster. He began his dance training at age nine at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. He later studied at The Juilliard School and danced with the New York City Ballet from 1988 to 1992.

He then joined the San Francisco Ballet, where he danced for seven years before returning to Canada to become artistic director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal from 1999 to 2003. Since taking over as artistic director of Ballet BC, Wright has created numerous works for the company, including 2010’s “A Simple Space” and 2013’s “The Coast.” His work has been presented internationally in cities such as London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul.

In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Jean Acker Award by UCLA’s Center for Dance Research for his contributions to the field of dance.
